This morning on Facebook, I stumbled upon a Washington Post article that read, "A Boycott Budweiser movement begins on Super Bowl immigration ad", leading me to watch the story of co-founder Adolphus Busch's turbulent journey to America from Germany in 1857.
Upon his arrival to New Orleans, he hears, "You're not wanted here. Go home!", highlighting the infinite struggles and prejudice he encountered as an immigrant. He later met Eberhard Anheuser to brew the iconic American beer.
Dramatized, but nonetheless, a true story that reveals one's strength in overcoming discrimination, then going on to make history because nothing stops your dreams.
From Marcel Marcondes, VP of Marketing at Anheuser Busch: "We created the Budweiser commercial to highlight the ambition of our founder, Adolphus Busch, and his unrelenting pursuit of the American dream. This is a story about our heritage and the uncompromising commitment that goes into brewing our beer. It's a human story about hard work and overcoming challenges."
I've worked closely with Anheuser Busch on experimental marketing this past year, and together we've created bold and punchy campaigns across many brands where I've learned the importance of shifting strategy from the biggest to the best, and building brand affinity. What struck me the most as a marketer, is learning to also appreciate the industry as it continues to aggressively evolve, but most importantly, the culture of strong and constant positive change.
Here is the story of their founder, and his pursuit of the American Dream.
